Saint Michael School Monday Memo August 25, 2014   \"Parish  \"Parish

Letter From the Principal

Dear Parents,

The first full week of school for K-8 went very well.  Did you know that:

  • Catholic education starts on Sunday rather than Monday? See Fr. Dick’s letter.
  • The school’s mission statement is posted in every classroom and office?
  • Two 8th graders lead the rest of the student body in prayer every morning?
  •  Students recite a summary of the mission statement every morning? (At St. Michael we are a family of lifelong learners.)
  • Logging on to teachers’ web pages will keep you up to date on what your child is doing in school on a daily/weekly basis?
  • There is a Sycamore parent guide posted in \"Documents\"?
  • Teachers are learning the ropes of Sycamore, too, so grades might be posted a little later?
  • Pre-school started last Thursday; the first swim lane is reserved for Pre-S pick up in Carpool 2?
  • When dropping children off in the morning pull around as far as you can go?
  • The parent meeting on September 4th is only for K-8?
  • The faculty and staff always appreciate your patience and understanding ?
We appreciate all your help to ensure our school days run smoothly.
                                       ~Mrs. Marstiller

Praise for our Playground!
The past two years our playground project committee, led by Lara Norrenbrock, has been hard at work.   Last year they focused on the existing playground (smaller) by removing old playground equipment and adding a tire swing, triple hoop and changing to rubber mulch.  This year they were able to provide the new playground to accommodate older and more students at one time. We are still waiting on the tether ball and triple hoop\"News to be added in the back (should be done by end of month).  New jump ropes, balls, hula hoops, and side walk chalk were also purchased.
A huge thank you goes to the PTO, School, ESC, 3M club and many individuals and families for their generous donations.  A total of $80,000 was raised for this project.  The students are enjoying all the new equipment!

Homework Tips
Reprinted with Permission from Enlighten Newsletter by Archdiocese of Louisville Counseling Services

It goes without saying, but homework struggles are a constant for some, especially the first few weeks of school.  Here are some tips to help get through the adjustment period.
1.  Resist the urge to do the work for your children.  Tough for some, but beware of excuses children will use to get you to do this for them.  Ask them questions to help his/her approach to the problem.
2.  Do your own homework.  There are online resources that can help you brush up.  Try skimming your child\'s textbooks at night to see what\'s ahead.
3.  Have a plan.  If the project is due at the end of the week, lay out what needs to be done around practices and other after school activities.
4.  Create a family calendar that details extracurricular, work schedules and deadlines.  This includes a daily routine.
5.  Set family study time.  Each Monday after children get their homework, sit down and discuss all activities, set deadlines and determine what information is needed.  This is a good time for parents to benefit as the children are occupied with study time.
6.  Tie homework to real-life activities. Look to current events to discuss social studies lessons or research specific jobs to bring science and math concepts to life.
7.  Get creative, especially with young children.
Ask your child to create a digital presentation for example; kids love technology.
8.  Create a calm and supportive environment.
Create an environment that is conducive to studying and learning.  Have a quiet space in the house where your child always goes to do homework.  It\'s also important to keep a routine and determine regular study hours.
Homework is never easy, especially when families seem to be moving at warp speed these days.  A little planning, a little patience, and a little quiet can go a long way to a successful school year.
